Rife Named Player of the Week
Had seven points and overtime winner for Milwaukee

MISL News Release

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave defender Josh Rife has been named the league’s Player of the Week for the 11th week of the 2012-13 season. Rife had three goals and seven points in the Wave’s two victories last week, including the overtime game-winner in their 10-8 victory against the Baltimore Blast on Saturday night.

Rife had scored just four points this season entering the weekend, but had a pair of goals as the Wave took an impressive 18-6 victory against the Missouri Comets last Thursday. While naturally a defender, Rife capitalized on a more advanced position on the Wave’s power play, with all three of his goals against the Comets and Blast coming with a man advantage.

Rife helped the Wave take their first lead of the game in their win against the Blast on Saturday night, setting up fellow Team of the Week selection Ian Bennett for his second goal, giving Milwaukee a 6-4 lead. Rife was in the penalty box late in the fourth quarter as the Blast tied the game, but redeemed himself as a power play for the Wave carried into the overtime period, finishing from close range 40 seconds into the extra session to move his side into first place in the MISL standings.

Joining Rife and Bennett on the Team of the Week are the Chicago Soul’s Carlos Farias and Syracuse Silver Knights’ Marcos Chantel, who each fired home decisive 3-point goals to earn wins against the Baltimore Blast and Rochester Lancers. Farias’ 3-pointer with 2:11 to play against the Blast moved the Soul into an 11-8 lead, and earned their fourth win in their past five games.

Chantel’s goal helped the Silver Knights snap a five-game losing streak, and came with 1:48 to play as Syracuse rallied to defeat the Lancers 15-14. The goal was Chantel’s first as a Silver Knight, and moved his side off the bottom of the MISL standings.

Completing the Team of the Week are Wichita’s Sanaldo, who played a key role in his side’s 12-11 win against the Missouri Comets as he made 18 saves on 23 shots. Rochester forward Mauricio Salles also earned a berth in a losing effort as he recorded four goals, including a first-half hat trick, in his side’s defeat against Syracuse.

The 2012-13 MISL season continues on Friday night with three contests, starting with the Baltimore Blast’s visit to face the Syracuse Silver Knights at The Oncenter War Memorial at 7:30 p.m. ET. Also on Friday, the Chicago Soul host the Milwaukee Wave at the Sears Centre at 8:30 p.m. ET and the Rochester Lancers visit the Wichita Wings at 8:35 p.m. ET.

Saturday night sees the completion of the home-and-home series between the Soul and Wave, with action switching to U.S. Cellular Arena at 7 p.m. ET. The Lancers also return to action, visiting the Missouri Comets at the Independence Events Center at 8:35 p.m.

Sunday afternoon sees Syracuse host Baltimore for a second contest at The Oncenter War Memorial, and the holiday weekend is capped by a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day afternoon game in Chicago, as the Soul host the Wichita Wings at the Sears Centre at 3:30 p.m. ET.
