MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Wave got three first-half 3-pointers that paved the way to a 13-6 victory against the Rochester Lancers on Saturday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Arena. Josh Rife, Nicolas Perera and Joe Hammes all struck from long range as the Wave took their second consecutive victory, welcoming Marcio Leite back to the line-up in front of 3,873 fans.
Rife opened the scoring early on to give the Wave a 3-0 lead, and in his second game back with the Wave, Marcelo Fontana scored to put the Wave up 5-0 heading into the second quarter. The score remained that way throughout most of the quarter until MISL scoring leader Doug Miller scored to trim the Wave’s lead to 5-2. But the Wave (3-2) ended the quarter with a pair of 3-pointers 10 seconds apart from Perera and Hammes to give the Wave an 11-2 lead at the halftime break.
Miller scored once again on a power play for the Lancers (4-4) to make it 11-4, which turned out to be the only scoring of the quarter. Late in the third, the Lancers saw multiple cards result in the ejection of Rey Martinez, but Rochester was able to reduce its deficit to five points when Brayton Knapp found the back of the net 1:59 into the fourth quarter.
That would be as close as the Lancers would get to a comeback, however, as Fontana scored his second goal of the game to put the game out of reach for good. Marcel Feenstra made 13 saves on 16 shots to preserve the victory for the Wave, who moved past the Lancers in the standings.
