Miller Named Player of the Week
Nine-point game led Lancers past Chicago in overtime

MISL News Release

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

TAMPA, Fla. – The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Rochester Lancers forward Doug Miller had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the second week of the 2012-13 season. Miller scored nine points as the Lancers took a thrilling 18-16 overtime victory against the Chicago Soul, their first of the season.

Miller scored twice in the first quarter, including one from the penalty spot, as he led the Lancers to a 6-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes. After Chicago had wrested control away, scoring 12 consecutive points to take a commanding lead, Mauricio Salles and Miller led the Lancers’ comeback with each scoring from 3-point range to tie the game 12-12.

Miller then appeared to have given his side a late victory, scoring his fourth goal of the game with 43 seconds remaining, but while the Soul were able to force overtime through Roberto Gallo’s strike, the Lancers were able to take victory in the extra session through Rey Martinez.

Miller now sits in fourth place in the league with 12 points, two behind league leaders Andrew Hoxie of Wichita and Carlos Muñoz of Chicago. After recording 66 points a season ago, he appears to be well on track to another standout season at the age of 43.

Joining Miller on the MISL Team of the Week is a pair of players from the Baltimore Blast, with defender Pat Healey and midfielder Lucio Gonzaga both being honored as they helped their side maintain its perfect start to the season against Chicago and Syracuse. Healey scored twice in Baltimore’s 17-9 victory against the Soul on Friday night, while Gonzaga had a pair of four-point games, scoring twice in a 10-4 win against Syracuse on Saturday.

Milwaukee Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg was selected after a strong opening performance that saw him concede just two goals and make 15 saves in the Wave’s 12-4 win against Wichita. Chicago’s Christian Meza earned his place on the team after recording three goals in two games for the Soul, while Missouri’s Coady Andrew’s completed the lineup as he scored the game-winning goal in the Comets’ 13-11 overtime victory against the Wave on Sunday afternoon.

The 2012-13 MISL season continues on Friday night as the Milwaukee Wave visit the Baltimore Blast at 7:35 p.m. ET at 1st Mariner Arena, a rematch of the past two MISL Championship Series’. Also on Friday night, the Syracuse Silver Knights visit the Missouri Comets at the Independence Events Center for an 8:35 p.m. ET kickoff.

Saturday night sees Baltimore make their first road trip of the season as they visit the Blue Cross Arena to face the Rochester Lancers at 7 p.m. ET, while Sunday sees the Silver Knights complete their trip to the Midwest as they face the Wichita Wings at 4:05 p.m. ET at Hartman Arena.
