HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Chicago’s new Major Indoor Soccer League franchise has announced the hiring of the team’s new head coach. After interviewing with several strong, qualified candidates from across the country, Mexico native Narciso “Chicho” Cuevas was appointed for the job.
Cuevas’ previous held positions include assistant coach of Mexican Club of America under Guillermo Huerta, international scout for the well-known Mexican club Pachuca, assistant coach at Mt. Carmo School for eight years, and head coach for Nacional for four years. Throughout his coaching career, Cuevas has accumulated multiple notable championships. He is a four-time Nacional champion with CLASA, four-time Nacional indoor soccer champion, three-time Copa Campiones champion, Nacional Tecate Cup champion, Nacional Copa Paisano champion, and Telmex Cup champion.
Cuevas has an equally impressive player résumé with past affiliations with prestigious Mexican soccer clubs, such as Cruz Azul, Toluca, Puebla, Pachuca, Veracruz, and Necaxa. He won Rookie of the Year with Cruz Azul and received the silver ball honor during the 1988-1989 season. Cuevas also holds the record for most goals scored with Cruz Azul in Mexico’s first division playoffs. He was awarded Most Valuable Player in Mexico’s Torneo del Sol, and has made his way onto the list of 100 best goals scored in Mexico.
"I am very excited about this opportunity,” said Cuevas. “We are hoping to bring a diversified group of players together to produce a winning combination on the field."
"We are grateful for all the interest we received for the coaching position. In the end, we felt Chicho was the best fit,” said Owner and Chief Executive Officer, Armando Gamboa. “We are excited to have him on board and are thrilled about the experience and level of talent he will bring to our franchise."
"It didn’t take long after meeting with Chicho to know that he is the one we want to lead us to an eventual championship in Chicago,” said Owner and Chief Operating Officer, Dave Mokry. “We were instantly impressed by him, and we are confident he will help us achieve an outstanding inaugural season."
With the coaching position filled, the franchise is now looking forward to establishing its player roster. The first set of tryouts will be held on Sunday, July 15 at 5:30 p.m. CT at the Grand Sports Arena in Hoffman Estates. A $100 registration fee is required of those trying out. The fee will be refunded to players who are signed to the team.
Players who are selected from the tryouts will travel to Milwaukee on July 18 to participate in a friendly match against the MISL defending champions, Milwaukee Wave.
