ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Lancers clinched a playoff spot with a 20-17 overtime win over the Wichita Wings in front of 6,720 fans. The Lancers were led offensively by Mauricio Salles who had a franchise record 10-point game, scoring four goals, with one 3-pointer, and an assist, including the overtime game-winning 3-point goal. Carlos Farias added six points on a pair of goals and an assist and Gary Boughton contributed five points on a goal and three assists. Kevin Ten Eyck led the Wings with his own four-goal game, including a pair of 3-pointers.
The Lancers will face the Baltimore Blast in the MISL Eastern Division Finals. The first game of the series will be in Baltimore at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, March 10th. The Lancers (10-13) will host the second leg at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12th. If the series is even at 1-1 after the two games, a 15-minute mini-game will be played at the conclusion of Game 2 in Rochester.
After getting a power play in overtime after John Ball was brought down by Wichita's Jamie Harding, Salles lashed home the game-winning goal from the left side into the top-left corner of the goal to give the Lancers victory and a berth in the playoffs. Wichita had sent the game to overtime when Chris Lemons scored with 56 seconds to play to tie the game.
Salles gave his side an early lead when he turned a Wings defender and scored from a tight angle from the left. Almost five minutes later, Wichita (7-13) would take its first lead of the game when Ten Eyck pounced on a Lancers' turnover and scored from beyond the 3-point arc. A little over a minute later, Harding would find Ten Eyck for his second goal of the game to give Wichita a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
Under three minutes into the second quarter, Lancers goalkeeper Pat Hannigan played the long ball to Salles who used the boards and then scored his second of the game. With under four minutes to go in the half, Angel Rivillo would set up Ten Eyck for his second 3-point goal, completing his hat trick. The Lancers would answer back a little over a minute later when Jeremy Ortiz set up Lubo Kocic to pull the Lancers to within two points. A little over a minute later, Boughton would unselfishly set up Farias to tie the game 8-8 with 1:48 to play in the half.
The Lancers momentum continued into the third quarter, and just over six minuted in Salles would play a give-and-go with Kocic and finish for his hat trick to give the Lancers a 10-8 lead. Wichita would answer back just 28 seconds later when Victor Quiroz set up Bryan Perez to pull the Wings even. Three minutes later, Quiroz would set up Ten Eyck for his fourth goal of the game to put the Wings back into the lead. But the game then swung back to the Lancers 17 seconds later, as Salles would find Boughton in the Wings penalty area to head home his own rebound to level the game. Just 23 seconds after that, the Lancers would retake the lead when Boughton found Farias and he ripped a goal from beyond the 3-point arc for a 15-12 lead. But with under a minute left in the third quarter, Quiroz found Perez, who scored from 3-point range to tie the game with 15 minutes to play.
The Lancers would push back ahead just under seven minutes into the final quarter when Ball scored his first goal as a Lancer on another assist by Boughton. But while Lemons' late goal denied the Lancers victory in regulation, Salles made sure his side clinched its place in the playoffs with one game to spare.
