ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Syracuse Silver Knights took a 23-9 victory against the Rochester Lancers this afternoon in front of a crowd of 7,210 fans at Blue Cross Arena as Nelson Santana had a hat trick and goalkeeper Brian O'Quinn recorded 25 saves for the Silver Knights. The Lancers were led offensively by Doug Miller and Carlos “Chile” Farias with five points apiece. Goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan made eight saves for the Lancers.
The victory puts the Silver Knights into a tie with the Lancers for second place with Syracuse in the MISL’s Eastern Division, but the Lancers hold the tiebreaker after winning the season series 4-2.
Syracuse would get on the board first just under six minutes into the game when Ryan Pierce poked home a rebound of a Slavisa Ubiparapovic shot. There was plenty of action, but O’Quinn would make four saves and Lancers goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan would make five to keep the game at 2-0 Syracuse after one quarter.
Early in the second-quarter, O’Quinn’s long throw found Enrique Tovar and his shot snuck just inside the near post to double the Silver Knights' lead. Eight minutes later, Tovar would set up Cory Elenio in the Lancers penalty area for the goal, and less than a minute later the Silver Knights would score again as Andriy Budnyy set up Darren Toby on the back post to give Syracuse an 8-0 lead at the half.
Syracuse would score first coming out of the halftime break as Santana converted off a free kick from the top of the arc off an assist from Ubiparapovic. Farias would get the Lancers on the board less than five minutes into the quarter on the power play as Lubo Kocic found Farias just off the top of the 3-point arc and Farias beat O’Quinn with a right-footed shot. Syracuse would answer back with a 3-pointer of their own as Kenardo Forbes set up Budnyy on a quick counter-attack to restore the Silver Knights' lead to 10 points. Farias would get his second of the game off a top of the arc restart with Doug Miller getting the assist to make it 13-5 Syracuse at the end of the third quarter.
The Lancers would score just over a minute into the final quarter as Jake Schindler found Miller on the counter-attack and Miller would finish past O’Quinn. But just 10 seconds later, Ubiparapovic would score off the rebound of a Daniel Stevens shot to hit back for the Silver Knights. Elenio then added his second of the game when he created a turnover deep in Lancers’ territory and finished into the top corner. Miller scored his second for the Lancers as Mauricio Salles took the restart and found Miller who finished high past O’Quinn.
The Silver Knights put the game away late, though, as with two Lancers in the penalty box, Santana would score his second of the game with Tovar getting the assist. Santana then completed his hat trick with the Lancers still shorthanded as he corralled a loose ball near the top of the penalty area and fired home. Jon Gruenewald would score an empty-net goal with Hannigan pulled in favor of the sixth attacker to round out the scoring.
